The
"IF AQUAMAN Can Get A Series..."
ART CHALLENGE!

Deadline: June 4th, 1998

This contest is not meant as an insult to Aquaman...well, okay, not just as an insult to Aquaman...but we've chosen this title to demonstrate that most characters can be marketable if presented right. I know that Aquaman has a rich history and culture, but he's still just a guy who commands fish and is pretty ineffectual out of the water. Yet this guy has had comic book after comic book!

Consider Animal Man. Sure, now we know that his series was groundbreaking Morrison weirdness at its best. But at one point, it was just Grant Morrison trying to pitch this unlikely character to an editor who had to think he was nuts.

So here's the challenge:

  1. Select a DC Comics character (or team) who does not currently have his or her own series. You may select from the inspiration box below if you wish, but you're more than welcome to pick your own favorite.
  2. In just one piece of artwork, make this character interesting. You can do a montage of scenes or just one large complex scene, whatever. Just pretend that you're pitching this character to an editor and you have one sheet of paper to use to convince him.
  3. Send it in to [email protected]by June 4, 1998.
  4. I and two other judges will pick the best one. The results will be announced in the June issue.
  5. The prize or prizes have yet to be determined, but we promise they'll be good!

Entries must be in a digital format such as GIF, JPG or BMP (scan in your drawings if necessary). Photomanipulations are allowed for backgrounds, although doing a background by hand can help your score. All acceptable entries will be shown in the June issue. Have fun!
