Our last contest asked artists to

Here are the results. As always, click the thumbnails to see the
full image.

"Lady Zor-El Hair Coloring"
by Carol Strickland
Carol's quite a devotee of Power Girl, as this entry and last
month's fiction challenge entry prove. Carol says, "We've
been discussing Power Girl on the (currently dead) DC message
boards, and I suggested that perhaps changing her hair color would
get her noticed." Cute idea. I must say, Carol's done a fabulous
job, not only in art quality but in advertising layout. A fine
entry that really works. |

"Nightwing for Life Line Ropes"
by Cyndi Smith
Cyndi used a photoshop program to make the actor Zen Gesner (Adventures
of Sinbad) into Nightwing. She says it's her first time using
Photoshop, which is amazing because it's good for a first try.
But it does need work, because the lettering is fuzzy. (Hmmm
just
noticed: the thumbnail actually looks clearer than the full image!)

"Brainiac Has The Power Inside"
by The Brothers Grinn
You can always count on the Brothers Grinn to come up with
a top entry that will make you giggle. This is not only a well-done
piece of art but it really could work as an ad. (I'd add Brainiac's
name somewhere in there, in case any people on the margins of
comics need a reminder of who that is.) There's just something
funny about using a villain to hawk a product, since he's going
to be using it for evil purposes!
This almost doesn't require any text, really, now that Intel's
logo has established itself. |

"Mr. Myzptlk for PEZ!"
by Christian Moore
Hmmmm
ANOTHER villain!
Christian turned this in merely days after this contest was announced
and
I was almost ready to proclaim it over and a winner selected.
This is just one FINE piece of art. I love the Spielberg lighting
and the sheer malevolence of Mxyzptlk. And EFFECTIVE, too.
It makes me want to buy some Pez! I wish they could figure out
a way for that Plastic Man dispenser to work, though. |

"Now THAT'S A Close Shave"
by Eric Newsom
Although it uses photomanipulations in a rather basic way,
I think this is a pretty funny ad. In fact, it works as just a
good razor ad, even if you've never heard of The Question! |
It always seems to come down to the Brothers Grinn and Christian
Moore, who have entered nearly every art challenge and, between them,
have dominated most of the contests. This month, we're lucky to have
Carol Strickland running neck and neck with them. Finally, in order
to make a determination, I considered this: which one could be a one-page
ad in TV Guide tomorrow and really work? For sheer inventiveness and
art excellence, all three of them work. But the Pez ad works best
of all. It's not only eye-catching, but it communicates its product
the best. Seriously, Christian, you should make a high-quality print
of that at Kinko's and mail it in to DC's ad division!
Thanks to everyone who contributed! Be sure to check out the Next
Art Challenge. This one is simple in concept and it should
be easy for everyone to come up with an idea or five!
